The Power and Movements of Chess Pawns

Chess pawns are often the most neglected chess pieces and are often sacrificed in the game. Yet, we have to understand the power of pawns and the help they give to all chess pieces major and minor. Here are examples of the abilities and movements of pawns.

Pawns are drawn up at the frontlines in the initial stage of the game, protecting major and minor chess pieces especially the king and queen. Hence, they are always protectors in the game and are thus rightly considered as soldiers. Often, they are the ones that first engage the enemy on the board and often serve as feeler attacks to test the skill of an unknown opponent.

Pawns move 1 or 2 spaces forward initially. Then they are only allowed one space forward at a time onwards. They are the only pieces that cannot move backward or sideways—they are not allowed to retreat or evade. When they take enemy pawns or other pieces they move diagonally left or right. In some games they are not permitted to simply pass enemy pawns by. Instead, taking a pawn a space away diagonally is mandatory.

Chess pawns cannot by-pass another pawn or any piece directly in front of it except when taking or capturing a piece situated a space away diagonally. Pawns are also often used as defense or protection for other pieces in attack or retreat strategies.

For instance, if we position a knight for checking the enemy queen or double-checking both the king and queen we may opt to support it with a protective ally pawn. Or, another example, an ally bishop may safely double check the enemy king and queen in tandem diagonally by supporting it with an ally pawn.

Though pawns can powerfully support and protect all other ally pieces, they are easily taken or captured because of their limited movements. They are also an easy option for sacrificing to perpetrate an ulterior win strategy or a diversion. Pawns often perform heroic missions to pave the way for a major tactic.

Pawns are easy to sacrifice because of their low value in the game, but we're better off taking as many enemy pawns as possible. This is because all pawns can be promoted to perform as major pieces except as a king.

Thus, Chess pawns play important roles in the game. We have to know their uses so we can play them in a better perspective and with effective results.
